It had to happen sometime, that a screenplay would be written and some young dude who’s not Leonard Cohen would play him onscreen. Imagine my combination of skepticism and eagerness when I found out about So Long, Marianne. I’ve just started watching it, so please no spoilers.
Two episodes in, and I’m caught in a time wobble with Hydra. I’m savouring the on-location richness of the island as I remember it from my visit in 2017, appearing on screen from the 2023 filming, retrofitted to the 1960s. And yet, other than the boats, little else really needs changing, because the town dates back to the 15th century—much of its more modern architecture was built in the 19th century.
