It’s midsummer weekend on the northern half of the globe (sorry, Barb), a time of broad daylight, when the sun lingers so long that the energy it infuses into your body flips back on itself and leaves you feeling slightly ragged. I’m sleeping and waking at weird hours. I’m having weird dreams.

Midsummer on the beach in Western Bay, Newfoundland, 2021. It was my first petsitting gig after COVID. Moving into a town I’d never seen before, even if it was only 90 minutes from home, made me feel like I was coming back to life.

This week, I’ve done a little time travel using midsummer as my portal. I’ve pulled out photos taken on days that stretched well into evening and pieced together some memories of what those days looked like.

We interrupt this post to bring you some Substack birthday freebies!

Did I forget to remove the paywall from my free post last week? Sorry if it didn’t work for you. Here it is again, just in case.
