If you know three things about me, you must know I’m prone to anxious thoughts. We could blame it on being in St. John’s in January, but you and I know “it’s always something.” An anxiety management hack I’ve learned to help regulate the body when those pesky nerves get worked up is to choose a colour, any colour, and then spot every object of that colour within your line of sight. It’s meant to bring your attention to the present time, to your body in the here and now.
I choose green. Probably because there’s so little of it to be seen right now.

When I try to think of green songs, Tom Waits comes immediately to mind. A close second is Van Morrison’s Bein’ Green blues. Do I see a green-inspired Spotify playlist coming on? Speaking of Spotify, and speaking of anxiety management, I made a Vagus Stimulation Playlist, basically a collection of everGREEN pop songs for when I need to settle a fight-flight-freeze urge. It’s not an up-tempo list to get me moving; it’s a bunch of songs in my belting range with long phrases to get my voice and lungs going. The playlist starts with “I’m Scared” by Burton Cummings, followed by “Sign of the Times” by Harry Styles, and it ends with “It Makes No Difference” from the Band’s Last Waltz. It’s a private playlist, but I’ll share it with you if you give me your Spotify username.
I did a search of “green” in my stored photos, and it triggered a yaffle of sweet memories. This post is not so much a search for green in the here and now, more a survey of green in the theres and thens.
