I’m hot off a visit to Greece and feeling pretty smug about the stuffed peppers and tomatoes Vasilis made for me while I stayed at his place in Athens. Time to do another travel food post.

His mom’s recipe, but his tweak was putting Cretan graviera cheese underneath the rice in each little veg pocket. The white bits you see are potato wedges.

Last time I had Greek stuffed veggies was when I was in hospital in Cyprus—stuffed pepper and eggplant. That hospital had the greatest home cooking. I’m not even joking.

I don't know if all hospital food in Cyprus is this good or if I got lucky. Three of my six meals were moussaka, keftedes, and stuffed pepper and eggplant.

I say I spent five days in hospital, but my food pics from that time tell me I ate six dinners, so I don’t know for sure. One of my sweet memories of that time was one older nurse who didn’t have as much English as the rest of the staff. When she’d come to take my vitals, she’d always call me “my daughter.” How are you, my daughter? Here you are, my daughter.
