I thought UNESCO was all about identifying places with cultural or historical significance. Newfoundland has five UNESCO sites. Remember what they are? First person to name all five in the comments gets a prize.

Here are some photos of UNESCO sites outside of Canada that I’ve managed to capture in photo form—not that I knew they had this status while I was in them. Chances are, you’ve also visited some UNESCO World Heritage Sites without knowing it. Here’s the list so you can check. We could play UNESCO bingo.

Venice lagoon, Perast in the Kotor region, Corfu's old town, and the Tétouan medina

Here’s a fun thing I learned this week. In addition to its list of significant locations, UNESCO also has a list of “cultural practices and expressions of intangible heritage.” They’re not just about places you can visit—they’re also about ways of life.
